Zenas Leonard, a rugged, discontented western Pennsylvania farm boy, joined a company of beaver trappers bound westward from St. Louis in the spring of 1831. Leonard was seeking adventure. He found it in abundance during four years as a mountain man in and beyond the Rockies.
